Impact Report 2022-2023

The CHUS Foundation has just begun its 46th year , with a heart full of gratitude and a head full of projects!

Our commitment remains the same: to continue improving healthcare services offered at Sherbrooke's university hospitals, Hôpital Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu, and pursuing our investments in medical research at the Centre de recherche du CHUS (CRCHUS). We are fortunate to have this incredible centre of expertise in the Eastern Townships, and thanks to you, we are contributing to its further development for the benefit of the population. With you, we're always gaining ground!

A word from the CHUS Foundation

Thanks to your immense generosity, the entire CHUS Foundation team ends this year with an unmatched sense of pride and gratitude towards our donors and partners of all kinds.

Together we crossed the 2018-2022 Major Campaign finish line in a magnificent way!

Photo d'un groupe de gens présentant la somme totale de 48 617 950 $ ramassé durant la campagne majeure de la Fondation du CHUS

Thanks to you: our donors, partners and volunteers, we contribute to excellence in care for the population of the Eastern Townships and make a difference in the lives of patients and their families.

The $40 million target was well exceeded.

Despite a slowdown, even a pause of several months during the pandemic, the results are exceptional, with over $48 million raised, thanks to our campaign board and all our collaborators who helped us reach this peak. Revenues for the fiscal year that just ended were also remarkable.

As you will see in this report, many projects have been launched to benefit the healthcare and research teams at our Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke in making a major impact in the field of health, thanks to you!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

A word from the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS management

The past year was marked by the end of an ambitious major fundraising campaign first undertaken in 2018.This important milestone for the CHUS Foundation ended with a huge success to which numerous donors and companies who take the health of the people of our region to heart have generously contributed.

The fruits of this great mobilization have enabled us to equip Sherbrooke facilities with cutting-edge technology, and ultimately offer our users more effective and safer health and social services.

In order to continue to improve diagnostic accuracy and offer ever more effective therapeutic options, healthcare research is also an essential element. To this end, the contribution of the CHUS Foundation is indispensable. It enables innovation at the Centre de recherche du CHUS to take medicine to a new level of excellence.

The members of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS Board of Directors join me in expressing our gratitude to the CHUS Foundation for its incredible support over the years.

Best regards,

The modernization of the angiography and hemodynamics rooms at the Hôpital Fleurimont, the revitalization of our mammography sector and the deployment of a senior-friendly approach at the Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke are just some of the projects made possible thanks to funds raised by the Foundation.

Your generosity has been a real force in the acquisition of new state-of-the-art equipment, the implementation of innovative approaches that put people first, and the launch of numerous research projects to meet the healthcare needs of our entire community.

Here are a few examples of projects that are making an impact!

Efficiency and safety

Hemodynamics

Since June 2022, more than 2 000 patients have benefited from this equipment for a procedure or an examination.

See how the biplane system works

Since June 2022, patients requiring intervention for stroke, cerebral aneurysms or vascular malformations have been able to rely on new biplane technology in a modernized, state-of-the-art environment. The biplane system offers two simultaneous views, making complex angiographic procedures faster and safer.

Approximately 3,600 people per year are seen in hemodynamics.

Visit this room

In this area, also called interventional cardiology, new radiological imaging equipment makes it possible to perform more complex catheter procedures that once required a surgical approach. Although they mainly perform procedures that are minimally invasive to the heart, if an emergency arises, this could be done in the hybrid room since it is equipped like an operating room.

Better care

for children with cancer in Sherbrooke

Un enfant atteint du cancer sourit à une infirmière

95% of children with cancer now receive all their treatments in Sherbrooke, close to their families. This is a big improvement since before 2018, it was only 1 in 4! The majority had to travel to Montreal, as the CHUS did not have access to all clinical research protocols. Donations have helped consolidate the oncopediatrics team and speed up the opening of various research protocols.

2,600 appointments and 1,000 chemotherapy treatments were administered in 2022-23, representing a 170 % increase over the previous year.

See how pediatric oncology donations change everything!

Several programs will be added in the near future.

Diagnose

breast lesions more effectively

Une patient atteint du cancer du sein pointe le mot courage sur un mur

In addition to being more welcoming to female clients, the breast imaging center at the Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke is equipped with two direct-sensor mammographs that make a tremendous difference in providing more accurate diagnoses, not to mention faster examinations, which aren't all that pleasant!

By 2022, 13,000 people had benefited from these devices.

How do these devices work?

"It's much more efficient technology. Before, we had to go and develop images, make our patient wait, and now the images appear directly on the screen."

The donations collected provide the opportunity to do more, for example, by acquiring high-tech equipment that would not otherwise be available.

It's important to continue to invest in the cause of health and to support the CHUS Foundation in its mission."

elderly emergency patients

Geriatric emergency care is an approach in which the needs of the elderly are at the center of staffconcerns.

At Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke, a multidisciplinary team of emergency physicians, nurses, geriatric nurses, physiotherapists, social workers and pharmacists ensure optimal care for elderly patients. The aim is to reduce the length of hospital stays, physical and cognitive complications that may arise, and ultimately, facilitate a safe return home.

"We hold silver accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians and are aiming for gold to optimize the care offered to our elderly clientele. With this important donation, we will be able to invest in staff training and the acquisition of specialized equipment to better meet the multiple needs of our patients."

Thank you to the Savoie-Les Résidences Soleil family, whose donation of $675,000 has made it possible to develop the geriatric emergency department and ensure that our facility remains a leader in the country in this field. Thanks to this contribution, the Fonds d’urgence gériatrique was created to meet the needs of certain elderly patients. Patients identified by staff will be able to receive essential products free of charge, to ensure their safety and comfort during their stay in the emergency department.

"This project is a great opportunity for our family to give back to a clientele we've been serving for many years. The healthcare system must be able to adapt, and we want to do our part. The work carried out by Dr. Brousseau's team will be an inspiration for all emergency rooms in Quebec."

What if bladder cancer could be detected non-evasively, from a simple urine sample?

Professor François-Michel Boisvert's team, in collaboration with urologist Claudio Jeldres, is developing a new rapid test that can detect the presence or absence of cancer through the presence of biomarkers, specifically proteins, in urine.

Bladder cancer is the 5th most common cancer in Canada, and 75% of affected patients are elderly men.

At present, many patients wait a very long time to undergo a cystoscopy, an invasive examination in which a camera is inserted through the urethra to obtain images of the inside of the bladder. A urine test would make it possible to rapidly target patients at greater risk of developing cancer.

“After demonstrating the effectiveness of the test on a hundred people in the Eastern Townships, we will proceed to validate it with 1,000 other patients from around the world. This project is attracting international interest.

In countries where cystoscopy is not accessible, this rapid test could save many lives. This is why the World Health Organization (WHO) has chosen to collaborate with the Université de Sherbrooke in the hope of designing a test that can be used by all populations."

Critical care transport teams and patients

Un ambulancier et une infirmière déplace un patient avec le nouveau système de civière.

Critical care staff benefit from a unique transportation system when  hospitalized patients need to be moved to another center for critical care.

Developed in collaboration with the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS team, the system facilitates faster, more efficient patient management.

Medical equipment is attached to the stretcher, reducing handling and cutting set-up time in half. The layout is more ergonomic and safer for healthcare professionals accompanying the patient in the ambulance: respiratory therapists, nurses, physicians and perfusionists.

Thank you to Quebecor for its generous donation, which enabled the purchase of this innovative stretcher dedicated to transporting patients whose condition is already fragile, and thus ensuring continuity in the quality of care during the journey.

"Quebecor is proud to be able to contribute to improving patient care with the aim of offering them the best chances of recovery. It's not just a stretcher, it's a wonderful innovation that saves teams precious time and ensures safer transport for the patient. It's reassuring for the people of the Eastern Townships, and it's important for us to help make a difference in the community."

In order to develop therapies better adapted to each patient and test prevention strategies, the High Precision Rheumatology Laboratory (HP), integratingBiobank, osteology, immunology, rheumatology and genetics research, is being set up thanks to the new Fonds HP Boire.

The goal is to develop world-class resources to support cutting-edge rheumatology research, and to collaborate with other centers in the U.S. and Europe.

The Centre de recherche du CHUS is already home to the Biobank, containing over 15,000 biological specimens from 1,500 rheumatic disease patients and almost 200 healthy subjects used as controls. No equivalent biobank currently exists in Canada.

Thanks to Mrs. Huguette Ménard-Boire for her $2 million dollar donation which, through the creation of the Fonds Huguette et Paul Boire (Fonds HP Boire), enabled us to finance the launch of this laboratory, with the ultimate goal of improving patient care through a better understanding of joint disease causes and mechanisms, their progression and response to treatment.

Did you know?

The mission of your CHUS Foundation is to support the only university hospital outside Montreal and Quebec City, covering Hôpital Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke. People of the Eastern Townships and the surrounding area can count on a comprehensive center of expertise to provide the care they need, whether specialized or super-specialized.

Thanks to your donations, we can also support the Centre de recherche du CHUS, where teams are working to discover and develop tomorrow's treatments.

Prix Jean-Besré

The Prix Jean-Besré recognizes the outstanding involvement of its recipient. This year, two people have earned this honour!

10 years of involvement

Ms. Martine Côté

Over the past 10 years, Martine has put her knowledge and skills to good use at the CHUS Foundation by sitting on the Board of Directors. In particular, she was responsible for the complete revision of the Investment Policy and the Disbursement Policy. Her passion has never waned over the years for this finance specialist, who will always take the Foundation's development to heart, and says she is impressed to see so many volunteers wholeheartedly involved. Convinced of the importance and privilege of having expertise like that of the CHUS and its research centre in the Eastern Townships, Martine has enthusiastically accomplished her long list of objectives! Her great availability has made her a highly appreciated volunteer who will never be far away...

Mr. Charles Custeau

Philanthropy is in his DNA. Charles embraces many causes in the Eastern Townships, and his involvement, which takes many forms, has been remarkable at the CHUS Foundation for many years. He has spent the last 10 years on the Board of Directors, where he held the position of Vice-Chairman. In addition to his administrative duties, he devotes a great deal of his time to organizing numerous events, notably the Souper gastronomique, which has been a sensation since its creation in 2009, with impressive results! A man of action, Charles is an outstanding ambassador for the Foundation among his extensive business network. We are very grateful for his generosity, his involvement as a volunteer and his determination to do more for the community.
