Impact Report 2022-2023
The CHUS Foundation has just begun its 46th year , with a heart full of gratitude and a head full of projects!
Our commitment remains the same: to continue improving healthcare services offered at Sherbrooke's university hospitals, Hôpital Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu, and pursuing our investments in medical research at the Centre de recherche du CHUS (CRCHUS). We are fortunate to have this incredible centre of expertise in the Eastern Townships, and thanks to you, we are contributing to its further development for the benefit of the population. With you, we're always gaining ground!
A word from the CHUS Foundation
Thanks to your immense generosity, the entire CHUS Foundation team ends this year with an unmatched sense of pride and gratitude towards our donors and partners of all kinds.
Together we crossed the 2018-2022 Major Campaign finish line in a magnificent way!
Thanks to you: our donors, partners and volunteers, we contribute to excellence in care for the population of the Eastern Townships and make a difference in the lives of patients and their families.
The $40 million target was well exceeded.
Despite a slowdown, even a pause of several months during the pandemic, the results are exceptional, with over $48 million raised, thanks to our campaign board and all our collaborators who helped us reach this peak. Revenues for the fiscal year that just ended were also remarkable.
As you will see in this report, many projects have been launched to benefit the healthcare and research teams at our Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke in making a major impact in the field of health, thanks to you!
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Martin Clermont
Jean-François Bérubé
A word from the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS management
The past year was marked by the end of an ambitious major fundraising campaign first undertaken in 2018.This important milestone for the CHUS Foundation ended with a huge success to which numerous donors and companies who take the health of the people of our region to heart have generously contributed.
The fruits of this great mobilization have enabled us to equip Sherbrooke facilities with cutting-edge technology, and ultimately offer our users more effective and safer health and social services.
In order to continue to improve diagnostic accuracy and offer ever more effective therapeutic options, healthcare research is also an essential element. To this end, the contribution of the CHUS Foundation is indispensable. It enables innovation at the Centre de recherche du CHUS to take medicine to a new level of excellence.
The members of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS Board of Directors join me in expressing our gratitude to the CHUS Foundation for its incredible support over the years.
Best regards,
The modernization of the angiography and hemodynamics rooms at the Hôpital Fleurimont, the revitalization of our mammography sector and the deployment of a senior-friendly approach at the Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke are just some of the projects made possible thanks to funds raised by the Foundation.
Dr Stéphane Tremblay
Over 20 major projects funded during this campaign thanks to you.
Your generosity has been a real force in the acquisition of new state-of-the-art equipment, the implementation of innovative approaches that put people first, and the launch of numerous research projects to meet the healthcare needs of our entire community.
Here are a few examples of projects that are making an impact!
Efficiency and safety
in angiography and interventional cardiology
Since June 2022, more than 2 000 patients have benefited from this equipment for a procedure or an examination.
Since June 2022, patients requiring intervention for stroke, cerebral aneurysms or vascular malformations have been able to rely on new biplane technology in a modernized, state-of-the-art environment. The biplane system offers two simultaneous views, making complex angiographic procedures faster and safer.
Approximately 3,600 people per year are seen in hemodynamics.
In this area, also called interventional cardiology, new radiological imaging equipment makes it possible to perform more complex catheter procedures that once required a surgical approach. Although they mainly perform procedures that are minimally invasive to the heart, if an emergency arises, this could be done in the hybrid room since it is equipped like an operating room.
Better care
for children with cancer in Sherbrooke
95% of children with cancer now receive all their treatments in Sherbrooke, close to their families. This is a big improvement since before 2018, it was only 1 in 4! The majority had to travel to Montreal, as the CHUS did not have access to all clinical research protocols. Donations have helped consolidate the oncopediatrics team and speed up the opening of various research protocols.
2,600 appointments and 1,000 chemotherapy treatments were administered in 2022-23, representing a 170 % increase over the previous year.
Innovation
in mental health
This new website offers information on anxiety and depressive disorders, as well as free, accessible programs to help people with these difficulties manage their symptoms.
The new ēquilia platform offers numerous online tools for taking care of one's mental health. A research team at CRCHUS supervises the ēquilia activities to evaluate the programs already proven by an Australian virtual clinic, This Way Up. Co-directed by Professors Pasquale Roberge and Helen-Maria Vasiliadis of the Université de Sherbrooke, the work targets continuous improvement of programs adapted to Quebec and Ontario clientele. Several programs will be added in the near future.
Diagnose
breast lesions more effectively
In addition to being more welcoming to female clients, the breast imaging center at the Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke is equipped with two direct-sensor mammographs that make a tremendous difference in providing more accurate diagnoses, not to mention faster examinations, which aren't all that pleasant!
By 2022, 13,000 people had benefited from these devices.
"It's much more efficient technology. Before, we had to go and develop images, make our patient wait, and now the images appear directly on the screen."
Head of Radiology at Hôtel-Dieu
A word from the Major Campaign co-chairs
Alain Lemaire
Honorary Co-Chairman
"Together, we made this Major Campaign a success. We are dedicated to our region and a desire to maintain quality care adapted to the needs of the population.
The donations collected provide the opportunity to do more, for example, by acquiring high-tech equipment that would not otherwise be available.
It's important to continue to invest in the cause of health and to support the CHUS Foundation in its mission."
Éric Bujold
Honorary Co-Chairman
"This campaign goes beyond numbers; it touches our people and our community. We have all been mobilized and motivated by a common desire to improve the daily lives of medical staff, healthcare for patients and the well-being of our society as a whole.
We are very grateful to the donors and partners who have generously contributed to this campaign. Your outpouring of solidarity and caring is inspiring, and we're proud to be part of this community."
Your donations help make a difference, from birth to the end of life, for thousands of people. Great outpourings of generosity have advanced care and research, and we would like to highlight some of the contributions received in 2022-2023.
You make the difference for...

Community Initiatives
We're very grateful to be able to count on a community committed to health. People with big hearts who count neither the hours nor the effort!
Thanks to these many initiatives, which generate substantial profits, the CHUS Foundation is able to fund a variety of health-related projects. Here are just a few examples.

Bertrand Hould Sailing Race
His round-the-world yacht race ended in 2022, but Bertrand Hould continues to share his experience and collect donations for brain cancer research. Since the start of his adventure, he has donated close to $15,000 to the Fonds Cœur en tête.
Souris Mini's Hats
Parents of newborn babies are invited to make a donation when they receive their child’s first free hat. The proceeds are donated to the maternity department.
Témiscouata Cœur en tête
A lasagna supper in Lévis and a spaghetti supper in Sainte-Hélène-de-Kamouraska raised this handsome sum for the Fonds Cœur en tête to support research by neurologist and neurosurgeon Dr. David Fortin. The fundraising event was organized by Jacques Charest and his wife, Johanne, in memory of their son Alexandre, who died of brain cancer in 2016.
Theatre Production
The theatrical adaptation of Dans une galaxie près de chez vous was a resounding success. Hats off to the Troupe de théâtre des employés du CHUS!

Volunteer Involvement
We are fortunate to be able to count on people who are dedicated to the cause of healthcare.
Without the support of all our volunteers, we couldn't do as much as we do. They provide a solid foundation for our activities of all kinds, whether on a day-to-day basis or at special events.
Gala reconnaissance
Every year, the CHUS Foundation holds a Gala reconnaissance to thank our volunteers for their involvement. While it's the perfect opportunity to recognize the importance of volunteering for an organization like ours, this special evening is also a privileged moment to honour certain individuals for their exceptional contribution in various categories.
Prix Jean-Besré
The Prix Jean-Besré recognizes the outstanding involvement of its recipient. This year, two people have earned this honour!
Ms. Martine Côté
Over the past 10 years, Martine has put her knowledge and skills to good use at the CHUS Foundation by sitting on the Board of Directors. In particular, she was responsible for the complete revision of the Investment Policy and the Disbursement Policy. Her passion has never waned over the years for this finance specialist, who will always take the Foundation's development to heart, and says she is impressed to see so many volunteers wholeheartedly involved. Convinced of the importance and privilege of having expertise like that of the CHUS and its research centre in the Eastern Townships, Martine has enthusiastically accomplished her long list of objectives! Her great availability has made her a highly appreciated volunteer who will never be far away...
Mr. Charles Custeau
Philanthropy is in his DNA. Charles embraces many causes in the Eastern Townships, and his involvement, which takes many forms, has been remarkable at the CHUS Foundation for many years. He has spent the last 10 years on the Board of Directors, where he held the position of Vice-Chairman. In addition to his administrative duties, he devotes a great deal of his time to organizing numerous events, notably the Souper gastronomique, which has been a sensation since its creation in 2009, with impressive results! A man of action, Charles is an outstanding ambassador for the Foundation among his extensive business network. We are very grateful for his generosity, his involvement as a volunteer and his determination to do more for the community.

2022-2023 results
The Major Campaign fundraising efforts have yielded exceptional results this year! We passed the $15 million mark in revenues, before considering changes in market value of investments.
Note: The sharp decline in stock markets in 2022 will result in a decrease of $1.8 million dollars.
