Together for our CHUS, our health.
2023-2024 Impact report
The CHUS Foundation works every day to mobilize the community and find the resources that will allow us to support our institutions, our medical teams and the Centre de recherche du CHUS, to benefit the health of our people.
It is truly a privilege to have a university hospital in our region. The CHUS, with its Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu care centres, provides a full range of specialized and ultra-specialized care to the population of the Eastern Townships and some surrounding regions. More than half a million people receive care annually at the CHUS.
Word from the CHUS Foundation
Thanks to your donations, we can help maintain and develop this centre of expertise, so that the care offered in the Eastern Townships relies on state-of-the-art equipment, advances in research, and the knowledge of the specialists and qualified staff who have chosen to practice here.
The CHUS Foundation is the only hospital foundation specially mandated to support the university mission of the CIUSSS of Estrie - CHUS.
This mission is vital to the development of future doctors, the evolution of practices, the transfer of knowledge, the attraction of top specialists - in short, so that we can benefit from the medecine of tomorrow here today.
As the healthcare network is once again called upon to transform itself, we owe it to everyone to to stay the course, while allowing ourselves to take new paths. That's what drives the reflections initiated this year by our Board of Directors in drawing up the strategic plan that will guide our actions over the coming years.
We want to give even greater support to the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS in the deployment of its mission and its centres of excellence. We will encourage the collaboration of all stakeholders, including the various foundations, throughout the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS territory, in order to maximize our impact on the population. We believe that it is by uniting everyone's efforts that we will be able to meet the growing needs and improve the well-being of an entire population.
Heartfelt thanks to our donors, volunteers, and partners for teaming up with us.

Jean-François Bérubé
Word from the management of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie — CHUS
Thanks to its substantial contribution, every year the CHUS Foundation succeeds in improving the quality of life of the people of Eastern Townships who require care in our Sherbrooke hospitals.
Having a university hospital centre in our beautiful region enables us to care for the population, conduct research and innovate, as well as teach the next generation, thanks in part to our collaboration with the Université de Sherbrooke and other educational institutions.
2024 marks the CHUS' 50th anniversary, and since its creation in 1977, the Foundation has worked attentively to ensure that the care and services offered are the best possible for the population within the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS territory. This collaboration is made possible by the generosity of our many donors. The CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS strives for excellence in medical care and research. Thanks to donations, care can be offered in an evolving context.
I join the members of the board of directors of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS in showing our gratitude to the CHUS Foundation for its undeniable support over the years.
Regards,
We are fortunate to have a facility that offers close to 100% of health care, from prevention to specialized and super-specialized care, at every stage of life.
This centre of expertise didn't develop on its own, let alone overnight!
Dr Stéphane Tremblay
Projects with impact
Your donations enable us to go further in meeting healthcare needs! From large-scale to more modest, the projects we fund all have a huge impact on the care offered to the Eastern Townships community.
By supporting medical research as well, we enable our specialists and their teams to improve practices for the greater benefit of patients here and abroad.
Research chairs
On Lyme disease
On organ donations
Did you know that approximately 60% of Lyme disease cases diagnosed in Quebec are reported here, in Eastern Townships?
The CHUS Foundation is proud to contribute to the new Research Chair on Lyme Disease and Emerging Infections.
With global warming, more and more ticks from the United States are migrating north, bringing new diseases and infections.
Better donor care could increase the number of organs available by 20%.
The aim of the new Justin Lefebvre Research Chair in Organ Donation is to develop new avenues of intervention to increase the number and quality of organs transplanted. The aim is also to train a highly qualified next generation of researchers and develop psychosocial support methods for bereaved families.
Why Justin Lefebvre?
At the age of 8, Justin donated his heart, liver and two kidneys following his accidental death in June 2017. This gift of life inspired his parents, Benoit Lefebvre and Marie-Claude Savaria, to perpetuate his memory. The Fondation Justin Lefebvre, the CHUS Foundation and the Université de Sherbrooke have joined forces to create this chair.
Precision and speed
medical imaging
The acquisition of three new positron emission tomography (PET-CT) scanners has enabled us to more clinical examinations and advance type 2 diabetes research.
More than 1,500 additional tests were carried out over the course of a year, mostly for cancer, but also for cardiac imaging, infection diagnosis and Alzheimer's and dementia screening.
The acquisition of more powerful research equipment allows us to increase by 3 to 5 times the number of clinical studies on diabetes at the CRCHUS.
Innovation
New treatments in oncology
The oncology unit's new Phase 1 gives cancer patients access to treatments in development, offering them immense hope in the fight against the disease.
Conducted under close supervision and now available in Sherbrooke, these clinical trial aim to establish the safe dose of a drug in an experimental treatment. Participants often suffer from advanced cancer, and have generally already received all available approved treatments with no hope of improvement or cure.
Better support
For pregnant teens
“I'm really touched to see how grateful these teenagers are. They have put their trust in us to support them during these decisive moments for the rest of their lives. I'm proud that this project is becoming a reality, to offer services adapted to the reality of these young mothers-to-be.”
40 young girls followed since January 2024
Since the end of January, pregnant girls have been able to access the services of the new Teenage Pregnancy Clinic in Sherbrooke, on the premises of Villa Marie-Claire. The aim is to optimize care for this clientele, who have specific needs not only because of their young age, but also because of the various psychosocial factors that can color their reality.
A multidisciplinary team looks after the physical and mental health of these expectant mothers, provides post-partum follow-up, offers advice on breastfeeding and helps prevent subsequent unplanned pregnancies. There are still many facets in development to come to support these young girls in different aspects of their lives, whether for budget planning, acquiring food skills or completing their studies.
A great way to give...
Workplace donations that really matter!
The Payroll Deduction Program (PDP) almost goes unnoticed when you decide to donate a small amount with every paycheque! Many employees of companies participating in our PDP program have signed up for this method of contribution. The deduction is taken automatically, in the amount chosen by the employee, who may withdraw consent at any time. It's a simple way to give to improve health care in our region, and a great way to get a tex return!
Thank you to the employees of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS and to those of the CHUS Foundation who participate in our PDP program. Thanks also to the companies that have implemented this in their workplace. Here are a few examples...
Two special days!
GivingTuesday
GivingTuesday was very well received by the CHUS Foundation in November 2023. Thanks to everyone who responded, and to Immex Société Immobilière, that doubled the donations received to a total of $15,000. In all, more than $46,000 was raised for healthcare improvements in just one day!
Giving Thanks
For the first time in its history, the CHUS Foundation devoted an entire day to making phone calls to loyal donors, and saying, quite simply... thank you! Doctors, members of CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS management and volunteers joined the Foundation team for this special day of recognition. This telephone blitz on January 11, 2024, International Thank You Day, enabled us to reach 1,032 people! Many thanks to all who support the cause and our efforts to improve healthcare in our region.
Did you know?
Your CHUS Foundation's mission is to support the only university hospital outside Montreal and Quebec City, which includes Hôpital Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke car centres. People of the Eastern Townships and surrounding area can count on a complete centre of expertise to provide them with the care they need, whether specialized or super-specialized.
Thanks to your donations, we also support the Centre de recherche du CHUS, whose teams are working to discover and develop treatments of tomoroow.
Whether for the whole community or dedicated to a specific clientele, your donations helps change the lives of people fighting illness and their families.
Here are a few examples of how you can make a big difference!
Together in action!
Thank you for participating in our benefit events! You contribute to improving health care for the entire Eastern Townships population and to maintaining and developing a centre of excellence in medical research close to home.
25 years of generosity were celebrated in the presence of 168 golfers who enjoyed a perfect day and 500 guests who enjoyed an emotional evening.
This anniversary edition raised a record $1.7 million! Since its inception, the golf tournament has enabled the CHUS Foundation to raise over $25 million to fund major healthcare projects.
A fantastic décor inspired by the tales of a thousand and one nights transported the 575 guests into a surprising and exotic universe. In addition to providing guests with an exceptional evening, the Souper gastronomique | Global Excel raises funds to improve healthcare. In 12 years, $3.5 million has been raised!
A lottery with 10 grand prizes and many happy partners! This year, the CHUS Foundation donated the proceeds to the Centre mère-enfant et urgence (CMEU), a new complex currently under construction to meet the growing needs of families.
For its 10th edition, the event was held in a Land & Sea version. The 170 participants enjoyed their evening, either on Lake Memphremagog, on the Grand Cru, or at the Kóz bistro near the MacPherson quay in Magog.
Proceeds from this event go to the Fonds de l'Espérance, dedicated to families who need a financial boost when their child requires care or hospitalization at the CHUS.
An unprecedented amount was raised during this 4th edition, thanks to the generosity of the 150 guests in attendance. Profits were donated to the Fonds Santé des hommes to finance research into various pathologies affecting men, such as bladder, prostate and testicular cancer.
A lottery with many chances to win, and this year, even more than usual! More draws, more winners and $100,000 worth of prizes. The CHUS Foundation uses the profits from this lottery to purchase small equipment for Hôpital Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke.
An auction that simplifies holiday shopping and gives back to health! More than 230 items found buyers this year, thanks to the generosity of donors. Proceeds will help us do more to improve health care for the people of the Eastern Townships.
In restaurants or at home, lobster suppers allow us to do more for children! The funds raised go to the Fleurimont Hospital's Pediatrics Department, to improve the care and comfort of the little patients who will be welcomed at the future Centre mère-enfant et urgence (CMEU).
A great way to showcase local produce and generate funds. Profits from this 7ᵉ edition were donated to the Fonds de l'Espérance, specially dedicated to families in need of financial support during their child's hospitalization or frequent treatments.
An online auction offering a wide variety of works of art! This year, 74 works of art were put up for auction. Art lovers and connoisseurs alike were able to discover their favorite pieces! Profits are invested in improving healthcare at Hôpital Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke.
For this 6th edition, some thirty players from Sherbrooke's business community were able to take part in a friendly match on the Centre Bell ice. Head coaches Réjean Houle and Yvon Lambert, former Montreal Canadiens players, masterfully directed our two teams. Proceeds benefit the Fondation Justin Lefebvre, the Montreal Canadiens Children's Foundation and the CHUS Foundation.
Defying the desert and soaking up the beauty of Morocco - a sporting challenge that lived up to expectations! The donations collected by our six participants were forwarded to the various departments or funds in the areas closest to their hearts.
The match du Phoenix was dedicated to the CHUS Foundation this year, with proceeds going to adult and pediatric oncology. Our three ambassadors, Safia, Sara and Robin, took part in the face-off and shared their stories with the thousands of fans gathered at the Palais des sports de Sherbrooke. Thanks to the Phoenix organization for this invitation to generosity!
Community Initiatives
There are so many different ways to do your part for health! We're fortunate to be able to count on the commitment of people in our community who succeed in setting up their own fundraising drives, and thus rallying a greater number of people to the cause. THANK YOU and BRAVO!
Some thirty activities were held this year, enabling the CHUS Foundation to reinvest a substantial sum in various projects. Imagination, audacity and perseverance are the order of the day!
Large-scale initiatives...
Le Mois des bébés plantes
For a 4th year, Serres St-Élie has continued what is truly becoming a tradition launched by owner Mélanie Grégoire! The month of March now rhymes with the sale of baby plants to help premature babies in the Eastern Townships and other regions of Quebec. Most of the profits raised and donated to the CHUS are dedicated to research, with the remainder going towards improving neonatal care at Fleurimont Hospital.
SKI TA VIE
More than 600 skiers, snowboarders and hikers took to the slopes, raising $362,117 for six Eastern Townships foundations: Fondation Christian Vachon, Fondation Claude-Durocher, Fondation Justin Lefebvre, Fondation Rock-Guertin, La Grande Table and the CHUS Foundation. In three years, the event has redistributed $1,057,117 to local causes. The 24-hour ski challenge was held at Mont Orford on March 16 and 17.
… and other examples of inspiring initiatives!
Walk for Michou
Michèle Tremblay's family organized a 2.8-kilometre walk through the forest in Bromont to raise funds for the CHUS Hemato-Oncology Department in Fleurimont. The Walk for Michou, which brought together 125 people, is also a gesture of solidarity with Michèle, who is battling a rare form of primary B large-cell mediastinal lymphoma.
The Milan
“Milan” is a very special beer created by Andréanne Ashby, in collaboration with Boquébière - Microbrasserie. By creating this lager for a fundraising event, the mother of one wanted to celebrate the resilience of her little boy, Milan, born with a congenital heart defect. Proceeds were donated to the pediatric department.
Conference “Les saisons du cerveau”
Inspired by his second book, “Les saisons du cerveau”, this lecture by Dr. David Fortin, neurosurgeon and neuro-oncologist at CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS, attracted 275 people who learned more about brain development throughout life. Profits were donated to the Fonds Cœur en tête, which supports his research work.
The “Green Team”
Students with green thumbs and big hearts! The Green Team, made up of students from grades 3 to 6 at École Vision Sherbrooke, sold the vegetables harvested during a gardening project and donated the profits to the Fleurimont Hospital's pediatric department. From sowing to harvesting, these youngsters saw the fruit of their labors rewarded!
Défi des générations
As part of the Défi des générations, Michel Dubuc organized a contest to enable golfers to benefit from the pro's advice at several clubs in the Eastern Townships. Marina Riendeau and Trycia Bernard made a virtual collection for their respective birthdays. Vanessa Côté collected donations at a mini-golf tournament. All for the CHUS Foundation!
Marco's lobster dinner
Marco Labrecque organized a lobster dinner to collect donations in recognition of the care received by his sons, Dany and Valier. The proceeds were divided between the Pediatrics Department and the Enfant Soleil Oral Immunotherapy Clinic at Fleurimont Hospital. This clinic allows children suffering from food allergies to be desensitized under medical supervision.
Aurélie et cie Garage Sale
Young nurse and former CHUS patient Aurélie Julien puts a lot of heart into her work and volunteer work for the CHUS Foundation. In collaboration with her sister Gabrielle and cousin Mathys, she chose to give a second life to various items by holding a garage sale and donating the proceeds to the pediatric oncology department.
In honor of Mila
Little Mila was born at 32 weeks and spent time in neonatology at the CHUS in Fleurimont. Her parents, Andrée-Anne Roy and Frédérick Cadieux, grateful to have a little girl so full of life, organized a collection to benefit the neonatology department for the good care she received.
The MudGirl challenge
Sara Villemure has taken up the MudGirl challenge, a 5 km race with over 17 obstacles along the way. Undergoing treatment for brain cancer in Sherbrooke, she'll stop at nothing to raise money for the Fonds Cœur en tête in support of the research being carried out by her doctor, neuro-oncology and neurosurgery specialist Dr. David Fortin.
Our entreprises Papillon
Many members of the Eastern Townships business community are demonstrating their commitment to health by becoming a entreprise Papillon.
By donating a portion of the sale price of a specific item or soliciting donations at the checkout, these companies allow their philanthropic values speak for themselves and help spread the word about the cause among their clientele.

Your impact
in numbers
All these donations will help maintain the university mission of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS and develop this unique centre of expertise in the region, offering specialized and superspecialized care to an entire population. Despite a more difficult economic climate, donors were very generous. In fact, donations received doubled compared with 2017-2018. The momentum generated by last year's major campaign continues, and we're very grateful!
Where do donations come from?

Where do your donations go?
The Centre mère-enfant et urgence (CMEU) is a major project designed to meet the growing needs of families and improve access to the Fleurimont Hospital emergency department. To date, the CHUS Foundation has raised $16.4 million thanks to the generous contributions of its partners and donors. Disbursements for this project, currently under construction, will continue into 2023-2024.
Your donations have also been invested in medical research, an important pillar in maintaining our centre of expertise here and enabling major advances in diagnostic methods and the discovery of new treatments.

Volunteer Involvement
Some have been with us for decades, others are just joining us! Our volunteers are all committed to doing more for the health of their community.
Without this invaluable support on a daily basis or at charity events, the CHUS Foundation would not be able to achieve the same results. Thank you for your support!
Tribute to Two Exceptional Volunteers!
Long-time volunteers, Mr. Roger Héroux and Mr. Robert Carignan were honored at the 25th edition of the golf tournament benefiting the CHUS Foundation.
The two businessmen behind the event have spared no effort over the years to make it one of the most popular tournaments in Quebec. Thanks to their dedication and powers of persuasion, the tournament has raised over $25 million in a quarter of a century!
After the 2023 edition, they decided to pass the torch and stepped down as heads of the organizing committee, but they are never far from the cause of healthcare and the CHUS Foundation. Already recipients of the Jean-Besré award in the past, we wanted to honor them especially during the 25th edition of the golf to thank them for their commitment that is as valuable as it is exceptional!
Gala reconnaissance
Every year, the CHUS Foundation holds its Gala reconnaissance to thank its volunteers for their involvement. While it's the perfect opportunity to recognize the importance of volunteering for an organization like ours, this special evening is also a special moment to honour certain individuals for their exceptional contribution in various categories.
Prix Jean-Besré
The Prix Jean-Besré recognizes the outstanding commitment of its recipient.
Mr. Alain Paquin
For the past 20 years, Alain Paquin has demonstrated a strong commitment to the CHUS Foundation. An outstanding ambassador, he has been involved in a number of charity events, including the golf tournament. His commitment to the cause of health is also remarkable, as demonstrated by his philanthropic contribution to the recent major campaign. An accountant by profession, Alain Paquin considers it natural and important to get involved in his community. “I'm from the east side of Sherbrooke and I've seen the CHUS grow over the past 50 years. I think it's really important to do my part in raising donations to fund projects at the CHUS, because we're really lucky to be able to count on such an institution offering specialized and superspecialized care in our region. You never know when you'll need it,” emphasizes Mr. Paquin, who is also preparing the next generation of his colleagues and even his family!
Your support is essential!
Thanks to volunteers for teaming up with us!
The time you devote to supporting us translates into great successes that have only one objective: to support our healthcare facilities for the well-being of the people of our region! Thank you for your dedication.
