Together for our CHUS, our health.

2023-2024 Impact report

The CHUS Foundation works every day to mobilize the community and find the resources that will allow us to support our institutions, our medical teams and the Centre de recherche du CHUS, to benefit the health of our people.

It is truly a privilege to have a university hospital in our region. The CHUS, with its Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu care centres, provides a full range of specialized and ultra-specialized care to the population of the Eastern Townships and some surrounding regions. More than half a million people receive care annually at the CHUS.

Word from the CHUS Foundation

Thanks to your donations, we can help maintain and develop this centre of expertise, so that the care offered in the Eastern Townships relies on state-of-the-art equipment, advances in research, and the knowledge of the specialists and qualified staff who have chosen to practice here.

The CHUS Foundation is the only hospital foundation specially mandated to support the university mission of the CIUSSS of Estrie - CHUS.

This mission is vital to the development of future doctors, the evolution of practices, the transfer of knowledge, the attraction of top specialists - in short, so that we can benefit from the medecine of tomorrow here today.

As the healthcare network is once again called upon to transform itself, we owe it to everyone to to stay the course, while allowing ourselves to take new paths. That's what drives the reflections initiated this year by our Board of Directors in drawing up the strategic plan that will guide our actions over the coming years.

We want to give even greater support to the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS in the deployment of its mission and its centres of excellence. We will encourage the collaboration of all stakeholders, including the various foundations, throughout the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS territory, in order to maximize our impact on the population. We believe that it is by uniting everyone's efforts that we will be able to meet the growing needs and improve the well-being of an entire population.

Heartfelt thanks to our donors, volunteers, and partners for teaming up with us.

Word from the management of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie — CHUS

Thanks to its substantial contribution, every year the CHUS Foundation succeeds in improving the quality of life of the people of Eastern Townships who require care in our Sherbrooke hospitals.

Having a university hospital centre in our beautiful region enables us to care for the population, conduct research and innovate, as well as teach the next generation, thanks in part to our collaboration with the Université de Sherbrooke and other educational institutions.

2024 marks the CHUS' 50th anniversary, and since its creation in 1977, the Foundation has worked attentively to ensure that the care and services offered are the best possible for the population within the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS territory. This collaboration is made possible by the generosity of our many donors. The CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS strives for excellence in medical care and research. Thanks to donations, care can be offered in an evolving context.

I join the members of the board of directors of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS in showing our gratitude to the CHUS Foundation for its undeniable support over the years.

Regards,

We are fortunate to have a facility that offers close to 100% of health care, from prevention to specialized and super-specialized care, at every stage of life.

This centre of expertise didn't develop on its own, let alone overnight!

Did you know that approximately 60% of Lyme disease cases diagnosed in Quebec are reported here, in Eastern Townships?

The CHUS Foundation is proud to contribute to the new Research Chair on Lyme Disease and Emerging Infections.

With global warming, more and more ticks from the United States are migrating north, bringing new diseases and infections.

Better donor care could increase the number of organs available by 20%.

The aim of the new Justin Lefebvre Research Chair in Organ Donation is to develop new avenues of intervention to increase the number and quality of organs transplanted. The aim is also to train a highly qualified next generation of researchers and develop psychosocial support methods for bereaved families.

Why Justin Lefebvre?

At the age of 8, Justin donated his heart, liver and two kidneys following his accidental death in June 2017. This gift of life inspired his parents, Benoit Lefebvre and Marie-Claude Savaria, to perpetuate his memory. The Fondation Justin Lefebvre, the CHUS Foundation and the Université de Sherbrooke have joined forces to create this chair.

medical imaging

The acquisition of three new positron emission tomography (PET-CT) scanners has enabled us to more clinical examinations and advance type 2 diabetes research.

More than 1,500 additional tests were carried out over the course of a year, mostly for cancer, but also for cardiac imaging, infection diagnosis and Alzheimer's and dementia screening.

The acquisition of more powerful research equipment allows us to increase by 3 to 5 times the number of clinical studies on diabetes at the CRCHUS.

40 young girls followed since January 2024

Since the end of January, pregnant girls have been able to access the services of the new Teenage Pregnancy Clinic in Sherbrooke, on the premises of Villa Marie-Claire. The aim is to optimize care for this clientele, who have specific needs not only because of their young age, but also because of the various psychosocial factors that can color their reality.

A multidisciplinary team looks after the physical and mental health of these expectant mothers, provides post-partum follow-up, offers advice on breastfeeding and helps prevent subsequent unplanned pregnancies. There are still many facets in development to come to support these young girls in different aspects of their lives, whether for budget planning, acquiring food skills or completing their studies.

Workplace donations that really matter!

collected in the workplace

The Payroll Deduction Program (PDP) almost goes unnoticed when you decide to donate a small amount with every paycheque! Many employees of companies participating in our PDP program have signed up for this method of contribution. The deduction is taken automatically, in the amount chosen by the employee, who may withdraw consent at any time. It's a simple way to give to improve health care in our region, and a great way to get a tex return!

Thank you to the employees of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS and to those of the CHUS Foundation who participate in our PDP program. Thanks also to the companies that have implemented this in their workplace. Here are a few examples...

BRP employees on way to another million!

Since 2019, BRP employees who choose to participate have been donating with every paycheck and holding benefit events for oncopediatrics at the CHUS. In 2023, they reached $1 million in contributions, and the story isn't over yet! The new challenge is to raise another million, this time within 3 years.

Since the very beginning, 5 years ago, the number of employees who have signed up for the CHUS Foundation's payroll deduction program has more than doubled, from 679 to 1,400 participants.

BRP employees are committed to helping children with cancer, and their contribution has made a huge difference for young people and their families. With access to a wider range of treatments, 95% of children are now treated here in Sherbrooke, close to home, compared to 25% prior to 2018.

CIMA+ employees always in solidarity

When a rare pathology that is also a major cause of mother-foetus mortality, affected the pregnant wife of a colleague, CIMA+ employees realized that life often hangs by a thread, and that a single health problem can turn everything upside down.

The importance of supporting the CHUS, so that the best possible care is available to the population, made perfect sense to this company, that joined the PDP program in 2020. Since then, participating employees give to the cause of health by supporting the CHUS Foundation with every paycheck.

“I've seen for myself how important it is to have quality care here in our region, and I know that it can literally save lives. I invite you to give generously to the CHUS Foundation. Don't wait until you need it.”

This year, a new fund was created to support people with disabilities.

Thanks to the Fonds PHASE, equipment not covered by public services can be offered on loan to people receiving care and services at the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS. This fund is also used for purchases aimed at improving the quality of life for people in rehabilitation settings, helping to support their social participation and recovery, as well as compensating for a disability while enhancing their quality of life.

2023-2024

20 requests approved

Fonds PHASE aims to support people with disabilities by promoting their autonomy through the provision of services and equipment. The Its creation was made possible by the Mirella & Lino Saputo Foundation.

“Tanya had to undergo a liver transplant at the age of 12, due to Wilson's disease, the body's inability to process copper. However, the disease had taken its toll: she lost the use of her speech, arms and legs. For the past 4 years, she has been undergoing rehabilitation to reconnect her brain to her body, so to speak. Robotized legs, financed by the Fonds PHASE, will enable her to train regularly at home as she learns to walk again. It was with great emotion and gratitude that we received the news, because we were going to a clinic in Montreal every week to have access to this technology. Tanya is very resilient and courageous. She hopes  to walk again more than anything. Thank you for all your help!”

A visit to the emergency room or hospitalization is rarely planned.

Many seniors end up in the hospital without having had time to pack a few essential items for their comfort. That's where the Fonds d’aide urgence gériatrique comes in! Since 2024, staff in the Fleurimont and Hôtel-Dieu emergency departments, as well as in the geriatrics department, have been able to distribute various items to enhance the stay of elderly patients who are alone or unable to obtain help from their loved ones to meet their needs. This fund was created thanks to the contribution of the Famille Savoie - Les Résidences Soleil.

Items offered:

Non-slip socks, razor, comb, toothpaste and toothbrush, reading glasses, deodorant, soft blanket, activity book.

Portrait de Robin | Rapport d'impact 2023-2024 de la Fondation du CHUS

A child in the hospital or requiring numerous follow-up visits is a major source of worry for families, and is often accompanied by financial stress.

In many cases, one or both of the parents must take time off work to be with the child, sometimes for long periods. The expenses pile up: travel, meals, accommodation, babysitting for other children and many other needs can be added to this list. Inflation and the economic situation of many families have led to an increased demand for help over the past year.

The Fonds de l'Espérance supports families in need of a temporary financial boost so that they can focus their energies on supporting their child. The fund is the initiative of businessman André L'Espérance and his family.

Your impact
in numbers

All these donations will help maintain the university mission of the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS and develop this unique centre of expertise in the region, offering specialized and superspecialized care to an entire population. Despite a more difficult economic climate, donors were very generous. In fact, donations received doubled compared with 2017-2018. The momentum generated by last year's major campaign continues, and we're very grateful!

Thank you for your 18,129 donations and purchases under $1,000.

Donors are presented according to payments received during the fiscal year 2023-2024.

Volunteer Involvement

Some have been with us for decades, others are just joining us! Our volunteers are all committed to doing more for the health of their community.

In 2023-2024:
Over 200 volunteers

Without this invaluable support on a daily basis or at charity events, the CHUS Foundation would not be able to achieve the same results. Thank you for your support!

Tribute to Two Exceptional Volunteers!

Long-time volunteers, Mr. Roger Héroux and Mr. Robert Carignan were honored at the 25th edition of the golf tournament benefiting the CHUS Foundation.

The two businessmen behind the event have spared no effort over the years to make it one of the most popular tournaments in Quebec. Thanks to their dedication and powers of persuasion, the tournament has raised over $25 million in a quarter of a century!

After the 2023 edition, they decided to pass the torch and stepped down as heads of the organizing committee, but they are never far from the cause of healthcare and the CHUS Foundation. Already recipients of the Jean-Besré award in the past, we wanted to honor them especially during the 25th edition of the golf to thank them for their commitment that is as valuable as it is exceptional!

Gala reconnaissance

13 awards
13 laureates

Every year, the CHUS Foundation holds its Gala reconnaissance to thank its volunteers for their involvement. While it's the perfect opportunity to recognize the importance of volunteering for an organization like ours, this special evening is also a special moment to honour certain individuals for their exceptional contribution in various categories.

Prix Jean-Besré

The Prix Jean-Besré recognizes the outstanding commitment of its recipient.

20 years of involvement

Mr. Alain Paquin

For the past 20 years, Alain Paquin has demonstrated a strong commitment to the CHUS Foundation. An outstanding ambassador, he has been involved in a number of charity events, including the golf tournament. His commitment to the cause of health is also remarkable, as demonstrated by his philanthropic contribution to the recent major campaign. An accountant by profession, Alain Paquin considers it natural and important to get involved in his community. “I'm from the east side of Sherbrooke and I've seen the CHUS grow over the past 50 years. I think it's really important to do my part in raising donations to fund projects at the CHUS, because we're really lucky to be able to count on such an institution offering specialized and superspecialized care in our region. You never know when you'll need it,” emphasizes Mr. Paquin, who is also preparing the next generation of his colleagues and even his family!

Your support is essential!
