50 years of care at the CHUS, 50 years of stories

News

For 50 years, the CHUS has been striving for excellence in care and medical research. Its health care staff contributes to the transformation of lives here in Estrie. Thanks to your donations, the care offered at Hôpital Fleurimont and the Hôtel-Dieu de Sherbrooke is in constant evolution and allows, every day, small and big miracles. We'll be giving you stories that bear witness to this throughout our annual campaign.

Carl's story

Carl, now 23

Watching this 23-year-old young man lead a normal life and even run half marathons, you can't imagine that ten years ago, his future was uncertain following a serious car accident. Victim of a severe head trauma, the adolescent was treated by a multidisciplinary medical team during the long months he had to spend at the CHUS.

“The intensive care team and the pediatric team at the CHUS plunged me into a state of artificial coma. After two weeks the doctors woke me up. I was in a vegetative state. My brain still needed time to recover from the injuries. In the following months, I had to learn how to speak again, how to eat, how to walk, and even... how to smile. It was hard. Luckily, I was able to be followed here, in Sherbrooke, and had the support of my family and friends.

I was surrounded by exceptional doctors, nurses and specialists who supported me in good times and bad, and there were some! I want to take this opportunity to thank pediatrician Claude Cyr and all the members of the CHUS trauma team who supported me during my hospitalization and rehabilitation. These teams inspired me to help others, to give them support and kindness. In fact, that is why I decided to become a special education teacher. I can say that the 13-year-old little Carl, but especially the 23-year-old Carl who is living today without any consequences of this accident, is very grateful to the CHUS and its staff. To you who read my story, I also say thank you, thank you for giving! ”

- Carl Samson

The CHUS has been changing lives for 50 years.

Together, let's continue to support the health of people here.

Your donation to the Fondation du CHUS allows us to invest where it counts, whether it is to buy high-tech equipment, to preserve and develop specialized care in our region, and to offer a care environment on a human scale.

Thanks for To give for health.
