Laurence has neurofibromatosis, a genetic illness that leads to the formation of tumours in the nervous tissue. This incurable disease currently affects one person out of 3,000. Though rarely cancerous, these tumours can sometimes provoke various complications.
On May 22, 2024, Laurence underwent surgery at the CHUS Fleuriront Hospital to correct a deviation in her spine, a severe scoliosis that had developed and required her to wear a corset. The operation went well and despite a week of hospitalization that was challenging for this young 11-year-old girl, she is recovering well.
''This operation changed my life!'', exclaims the bubbly Laurence.
She had only good words for the staff, her doctors, Dr. Claude Cyr and Dr. Chantal Théoret, as well as the nurses and orderlies who cared for her. Neurofibromatosis demands regular medical follow-ups, so there are multiple hospital visits each year.
''They are all incredible,'' Laurence says, grateful for the opportunity to receive care in her city, close to her family and friends.
Laurence herself is incredible, too. For the past 4 years, she has been putting her artistic talent to use by creating and selling Christmas ornaments. All profits go to the CHUS Foundation so that funds collected can help to improve care. She confided that her surgery has helped her to feel better and that now she will be able to make more decorations this year ''to help even more people!'' Here is a young patient filled with creativity, generosity and inspiration.
Good job, Laurence!
