The CHUS Foundation is proud to announce that the Savoie - Les Résidences Soleil family is making a very important contribution to the development of the geriatric emergency at the Fleurimont Hospital and the Hôtel-Dieu in Sherbrooke. A donation of $675,000 is offered to support an approach better adapted to seniors and also to create the Fonds d’aide urgence gériatrique for this clientele.
In Sherbrooke, the concept of geriatric emergency was born at the Hôtel-Dieu where a multidisciplinary team composed of emergency doctors, nurses, geriatric clinical nurses, physiotherapists, social workers and pharmacists is in place for optimal care of the elderly. Stakeholders aim to promote a safe return to the home, while reducing the physical and cognitive disadvantages that may be associated with a hospital stay.
The gift from the Savoie family — Les Résidences Soleil will make it possible to do more.
“We will be able to develop the geriatric emergency and reach a higher level of excellence. We hold a silver accreditation from the American College of Emergency Physicians and we are aiming for gold to optimize the care offered to our elderly clientele. With this important donation, we will be able to invest in staff training and in the acquisition of specialized equipment to better meet the multiple needs of our patients.”
explains the emergency physician, responsible for the geriatric component at the CIUSSS de l'Estrie - CHUS, Dr. Audrey-Anne Brousseau.
With the aging of the population, the proportion of elderly people in emergency rooms is greater.
“This project is a great opportunity for our family to give back to a clientele that we have been serving for many years. The health system must be able to adapt and we want to do our part. The work carried out by Dr. Brousseau's team must be an inspiration for all emergency rooms in Quebec.”
declares Mr. Eddy Savoie, chairman of the board of directors and founder of Résidences Soleil.
The Director General of the Foundation, Mr. Martin Clermont adds that the new emergency in Fleurimont, in the future Mother and Child Emergency Center (CMEU), will benefit from this donation.
“With the help of this valuable donor, we are proud to be able to contribute to the improvement of care for seniors on the territory of our two hospitals in Sherbrooke. The geriatric approach will completely change their passage to the emergency room, which we want to be as short and reassuring as possible, both for patients and for their families.”
Creation of the Fonds d’aide urgence gériatrique
Thanks to the contribution of the Savoy family, the new Fonds d’aide urgence gériatrique also sees the light of day. This fund is reserved for elderly people who have one or more basic needs, aimed at their safety and comfort, which cannot be met by them or those around them during their stay in the emergency room. Personal care products, reading glasses, socks, anti-slip slippers, among others may be provided to persons identified by staff.
The population is also invited to contribute to this fund and thus participate in the well-being of seniors who come to the emergency room.
