They are committed to donating $1 million for pediatric oncology to Hôpital Fleurimont within 3 years. The announcement was made at an internal event held at the end of the week in Valcourt.
Mr. Daniel Martin, Director General of Operations at BRP, assures that a feeling of great pride animates the employees who have participated in the CHUS Foundation source deduction program for several years.
“Research is making progress in the discovery of new treatments against cancer and our young patients must be able to benefit from them quickly. We are happy and proud to contribute to the improvement of accessible care here.”
The employees have just completed a first fundraiser, also from
$1 million, started in 2019. Thanks to this very important support, cancer treatment for children has increased enormously at Hôpital Fleurimont and 95% of children are fully treated in Estrie, compared to 25% before 2018.
“We were able to consolidate our team and accelerate the opening of numerous research protocols, which favors the retention of patients in their region for all types of care. In fact, we have observed a very significant increase in the number of new patients diagnosed and treated at the CHUS Fleurimont over the past 2 years, with 25 new cases already since the beginning of 2023 compared to 31 per year in 2021 and 2022.”
explains Dr. Josée Brossard, head of the hemato-oncology department at the CIUSSS de l'Estrie — CHUS. She states that more than 2,600 appointments and 1,000 chemotherapy treatments were administered in 2022—23, which represents an increase of 170% compared to the previous year.
This new commitment, valued at $1 million, will allow the pediatric oncology team to enhance its research and collaboration activities with all experts within national and international consortia.
“I can only add a huge thank you to all the BRP employees who have this cause tattooed on their hearts. This great contribution gives hope to families living with this terrible diagnosis for their child. It is so reassuring to see this great mobilization to increase their chances of recovery.”
says the director general of the CHUS Foundation, Mr. Martin Clermont.
